CSHE TEACHING AND LEARNING FORUM 2007
A series of seminars and activities focused on achieving excellence and distinctiveness in the University of Melbourne’s undergraduate programs
The Teaching and Learning Forum’s program of activities will provide the opportunity throughout 2007 for an ongoing University-wide discussion of issues, possibilities and good practice in undergraduate teaching. The Forum will have a particular focus on first year subjects, in which there is the challenge of larger student cohorts. A new program of competitive development grants focussed on innovation in large group teaching, sponsored by Professor Peter McPhee. DVC (Academic), will be integrated with the Forum activities.
The goal of the Forum is to contribute to effective, innovative approaches to teaching and learning that will ensure excellence and distinctiveness in the New Generation degrees and other undergraduate programs. The Forum will provide an opportunity to share innovation in:
- approaches to first year teaching;
- techniques for large group lectures;
- the arrangement and coordination of small group teaching;
- the training and support of sessional teaching staff;
- the strategic use of assessment;
- the use of new teaching spaces; and
- the use of ICT.
The Forum will also consider the ways in which effective learning communities can be created to allow students to gain full benefit from a cohort experience.
The Teaching and Learning Forum will comprise a linked series of events, including workshops, seminars and the Deputy Vice-Chancellor’s Summit. These events will be widely advertised. Staff wishing to be added to the Forum email list should contact Adeline Sze, asze.unimelb.edu.au.
The Teaching and Learning Forum is a joint initiative of:
- the Academic Board;
- the Board of Undergraduate Studies;
- the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) ; and
- the Centre for the Study of Higher Education
