The initiative

Example website: http://www.com.unisa.edu.au/cmmediaforum/

Students from Australia, Singapore, the USA., the UK and beyond, meet in the Media Forum website to respond to between 2-4 media reports (depending on the assessment weighting) originating in various world regions on a range of topical issues.

Students provide:

  • a personal response to the issue, which demonstrates the ways in which our cultural positioning and experience informs our beliefs and values

  • a critical response to the report, which draws on knowledge of good journalistic practice gained in their coursework

  • a response to other students postings, engaging with alternative views often resulting in a modification of their original stance

Students gain:

  • a highly interactive and focussed opportunity to recognise the diversity of media and audiences

  • skills in critically evaluating media output

The reason for the initiative's effectiveness

Over 500 students have participated in the Media Forums. As a form of assessment it is highly effective in achieving a deep and 'lived' understanding of media and cultural diversity. Student evaluations are overwhelmingly positive. The Forums are very easily established and managed, producing high level learning outcomes.
