Professional Development Opportunities
In the area of teaching and learning, and other areas relevant to an academic career, the University of Melbourne offers a number of opportunities for professional development for academic staff. Centre for the Study of Higher Education

CSHE is a centre responsible for research and teaching in the field of higher education, as well as for the provision of academic development services. It offers regular professional development programs including workshops on key issues in teaching.
Multimedia Education Unit

The mission of the MEU is to advance the use of multimedia and related technology in teaching and learning at the University. It provides technical and educational advice and service in a range of areas including software planning and evaluation, programming, assistance in incorporating educational technology into curriculum design, and related academic staff development services. The Unit runs seminars on issues and developments in educational technology.
Information Technology Service

ITS provides training programs which focus on basic information technology skills such as word processing and spreadsheets. There are also courses which cover more advanced topics. All staff members and graduate students are welcome to attend and the basic skills courses are free of charge for these groups.
Staff Development and Training

The primary mission of this unit is to provide development opportunities for general staff, but academic staff may attend courses provided the program matches their needs and there is room available in the sessions. Programs are offered regularly in a range of areas, including work skills, management, occupational health and safety, and equal opportunity.
Equal Opportunity Unit

The Unit offers programs and materials which deal with equal opportunity and sexual harassment issues in relation to teaching and learning, as well as employment.
Disability Liaison Unit

As well as providing assistance for students with disabilities, the Unit also liaises with teaching staff to make appropriate arrangements and provide advice about ways of enhancing the educational experiences and achievements of students with disabilities.
School of Graduate Studies.
If you are a graduate student, you can participate in the programs conducted in the Graduate Centre by the School of Graduate Studies in conjunction with the University of Melbourne Postgraduate Association. These include Short Skills Programs, covering many areas such as computer skills, communication and research skills, and leadership.
In addition, many departments run staff development programs of their own which focus on various aspects of teaching and learning within the discipline. There are many opportunities for professional development in the area of research, including departmental seminar programs, university lectures and conferences. You should find plenty of advice about these within your department.
