What does Australia need from its tertiary institutions, now and in the future? is the first seminar in the Investing in the Future: Renewing Australian Tertiary Education public seminar series presented by the University of Melbourne.

This opening session will explore Australian higher education and training and national needs at the time of a major review of tertiary education policy. Two outstanding university leaders will discuss how to build national capacity in the era of the global knowledge economy, education’s contribution to the workforce and productivity, the potential of government to make a difference, and the strengthening of coordination across the tertiary sector.

Professor Glyn Davis, AC, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Melbourne, is one of Australia’s foremost intellectuals in the areas of public policy and governance. Recently, Davis was co-chair, with Prime Minister Kevin Rudd, of the 2020 Summit.

Professor Stephen Parker, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Canberra, has had a distinguished career in academia and legal practice. Professor Parker has served on an Expert Advisory Committee of the Australian Research Council and as an academic auditor for the Australian Universities Quality Agency. (paper)

The session will be chaired by Emeritus Professor Denise Bradley, AC, Chair of the Australian Higher Education Review Expert Panel

Light refreshments will be available in the Woodward Centre from 6.00pm – 6.30pm, followed by presentations from the speakers, and a period of discussion and audience participation.
