Associate Professor Sophie Arkoudis, PhD, MEd, Dip Ed, BA.
Sophie Arkoudis is Deputy Director of the CSHE and an Associate Professor in Higher Education. Her research interest broadly focuses on student experience in higher education. Her research program spans curriculum design and assessment, English language teaching and learning in higher education, English language assessment, student finances, teaching research nexus, academic workforce and internationalising the curriculum.
Sophie has led major national studies in recent years. In 2012 received an Office for Teaching and Learning National Senior Teaching Fellowship to develop options and strategies for integrating English language learning outcomes in higher education curricula. She directed a national project funded by the Australian Learning and Teaching Council focused on enhancing interaction between international and local students, which was awarded the International Education Association of Australia Award for Best Practice/Innovation in International Education in 2011. She was also a member of the Steering Committee that developed the Good Practice Principles for English Language Proficiency for International Students in Higher Education (DEEWR).
Sophie has published widely in the area of English language education. She has presented keynotes both nationally and internationally on her research into language and disciplinary teaching, English language standards, international students in higher education and English language development. She has supervised 14 research students to successful completion, including eight doctoral students.
