Sophie Arkoudis is Deputy Director and a senior lecturer in higher education. She joined the CSHE in 2005, after working as an academic in the field of teaching English to speakers of other languages. Her research is associated with higher education policy development, and she has been involved in various projects for government, the Australian Learning and Teaching Council (ALTC) and The University of Melbourne .  Her particular areas of expertise are international education, socialisation between diverse student groups, English language development, and integrating language and disciplinary learning and teaching in higher education.

Sophie has published widely in the area of English language education. She has presented keynotes both nationally and internationally on her research into language and disciplinary teaching, international students in higher education and English language development.  She has supervised 11 research students to successful completion, including five doctoral students.

Sophie lead a DEEWR commissioned project on the impact of English language proficiency on employment outcomes for tertiary international students. She was also a member of the DEEWR commissioned English Language Proficiency Project Steering Committee, which developed the Good Practice Principles for English Language Proficiency for International Students. She is currently leading an ALTC funded project on enhancing engagement between local and international students.

Sophie has developed a range of resources to support university teaching. Teaching International Students was released in 2006 and has generated interest both nationally and internationally. She lead an inter-disciplinary team within the University that explored integrating disciplinary and English language teaching, and lead to the development of the English Language Development Advisory Group within the University.  She has conducted teaching and learning workshops within the university, and is involved in presenting research supervision workshops with the School of Graduate Research.

Current research projects


Enhancing Domestic and International Student Engagement:  Strategies for influencing attitudes and behaviours. This project is directed by Dr Sophie Arkoudis , and includes Ms Chi Baik, (CSHE), Dr Shanton Chang, Professor Ian Lang and Associate Professor Kim Watty, all from the University of Melbourne; Associate Professor Helen Borland and Dr Amanda Pearce from Victoria University; and Dr Josephine Lang from RMIT.
