The University of Melbourne presents Education, Science and the Future of Australia: A Public Seminar Series on Policy

Challenges for Early Learning and Schooling

Monday 23 July 2007, 6.00pm – 8.30pm

Challenges for Early Learning and Schooling is the third seminar in the Education, Science and the Future of Australia public seminar series presented by the University of Melbourne. This seminar will explore the possibilities for improving learning and equity of outcomes in Australian schooling and childhood education.

How effective are Australia’s policies and outcomes in early childhood learning and care? How do we fare internationally? What can be done about persistent social inequalities? How can schooling better contribute to national development? Do we have the right mix of public and private schooling? How can enhanced community partnerships be developed? How do we prepare teachers and early childhood educators for the changing character of their work?

The University is pleased to host two of Australia's foremost educational experts who will examine these and other questions:
Professor Barry McGaw AO, former OECD Director and currently Director, Melbourne Education Research Institute, University of Melbourne. Professor McGaw is an internationally renowned educator who has chaired or been a member of government committees on education in England, Canada and Ireland.

Professor Collette Tayler, School of Early Childhood and Centre for Learning Innovation, Queensland University of Technology and member of the Board of Directors of Save the Children Australia. Professor Tayler’s research program examines the ways that social, family and educational policies affect early childhood education and care outcomes.

The session will be chaired by Professor Glyn Davis, Vice-Chancellor, University of Melbourne.

Light refreshments will be available in the Woodward Centre from 6.00pm – 6.30pm, followed by presentations from the speakers, and a period of discussion and audience participation.
