What can governments achieve? is the fifth and final seminar in the Education, Science and the Future of Australia public seminar series presented by the University of Melbourne.

This final seminar is an opportunity for a lively discussion on policy and policy-making. The session will examine the broad public policy environment in Australia: How is policy formulated? How might it be formulated? What are the limits to what governments can achieve? How can we create better public policy?

In the lead up to the federal election, the University is pleased to welcome Mr Andrew Jaspan, Editor in Chief, The Age, to chair a discussion led by two prominent Australian public figures:

Mr John Roskam is Executive Director of the Institute of Public Affairs. Before joining the IPA, he was Executive Director of The Menzies Research Centre and Chief of Staff to Dr David Kemp, the Federal Minister for Employment, Education, Training and Youth Affairs. Mr Roskam is a widely published and well-known public commentator. His policy analysis includes reports such as Australia's Education Choices and The Protocol: Managing Relations with NGOs.

Ms Maxine McKew is a former leading journalist who hosted a number of programmes on television and radio, including Lateline, for which she won the 1998 Walkley Award for Broadcast Interviewing, and The 7.30 Report. After resigning from the ABC, McKew joined the Australian Labor Party as a special adviser on strategy to Kevin Rudd. Ms McKew will stand for the seat of Bennelong in the forthcoming federal election.

Light refreshments will be available in the Woodward Centre from 6.00pm – 6.30pm, followed by presentations from the speakers, and a period of discussion and audience participation.
