The Enterprise University Project (2003-2007)
The Enterprise University as Networked University: Investigating the contribution of Australian higher education institutions to social capital (2003-2007)
ARC Discovery Grant project
Simon Marginson Australian Professorial Fellow, Catherine Burnheim PhD student
Project summary:
This project has two components:
1. ARC Discovery project: As well as creating benefits for individuals higher education creates broader social, economic and cultural benefits or ‘public goods’. Though these are of major significance for the community and government they have eluded definition and plausible measurement. However recent research on social capital – the norms and networks (including ICT networks) that facilitate cooperation – provides a promising new line of inquiry. Building on three previous ARC studies of Australian universities, the project investigate local and global networks sustained by case study institutions.
2. ARC Professorial Fellowship research program: Under this program Professor Marginson is developing an integrated analysis of the globally networked research university as an institution. This program and outputs to date are summarised below.
Principal project aims:
1. Develop and apply new tools for identifying and in part measuring certain external effects of higher education institutions, adapting techniques used in studies of social capital.
2. Apply these tools in case studies, investigate external networks of Australian universities, including local and global networks, focusing on communications
3. Provide training for a doctoral student in the field of inquiry and subject matter
4. Development of an integrated analysis of the Globally Networked Enterprise University through a series of projects of research and scholarship (the Australian Professorial Fellowship Program)
Case studies:
The project case studies each consist of an intensive program of interviews and documentary analysis in relation to the external community and industry linkages of Australian universities. These studies have taken place at Monash University, the University of WA and the University of Queensland.
Theorisations in relation to social capital:
The project researchers (Professor Marginson and Catherine Burnheim), together with Emmaline Bexley, the Research Fellow employed on a parallel ARC Linkage project LP0347300, have pursued a program of reading and theorisation. The principal outcome so far is the conceptual sections of the ARC linkage project report (see link to Tertiary education and social capital in Victoria: the effects of the new economy courses in Business and IT (2003-2005), and a conference paper delivered in February 2007:

Australian Professorial Fellowship research program:
This program and its place in the larger body of work by Professor Marginson is summarised as follows (April 2007). Items 5-6, 8-12 and 14 have been developed during the Fellowship period:
